🇮🇳 German Pension Refund for Indian Citizens
As an Indian citizen, you can generally claim a German pension refund if you have fewer than 60 German contribution months, at least 24 months have passed since your last mandatory pension contribution in Germany, the EU, the UK, Türkiye or an ex-Yugoslav country, and you live outside the EU and the UK. Living in India does not block your claim — uniquely among all nationalities.

Do I qualify for a German pension refund as an Indian citizen?

Living in India — the rule nobody else has
India is the only agreement country with this twist: the Germany–India social security agreement gives anyone with even a single German contribution month the right to voluntary German insurance while residing in India — and holding that right blocks a refund, the same way living in the EU would. The exception is Indian citizens themselves: under the agreement's refund provisions, you can claim while living in India. For every other nationality, a move out of India comes first.
How much can you get back?
IIn 2026 so far, Indian clients received €11,348 on average — across all nationalities, results range from under €200 to over €38,000. Refundable contributions include 100% of the pension contributions withheld from your salary and 50% of voluntary contributions. The exact sum depends on your individual situation. Refundable contributions include:
100% of the pension contributions withheld from your salary during employment in Germany.
50% of voluntary contributions made, such as those from freelance work.
Adjustments for contributions added or deducted due to pension equalization following a divorce before a German court.
Since 2018, pension insurance contributions have been set at 9.3% of your gross earnings, up to a monthly income threshold (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze). In 2026, this threshold is €8,450 (2025: €8,050). Earnings exceeding this limit are not subject to contributions.
What you need to apply
Your valid passport, your German pension number (Versicherungsnummer) — our German social security number guide explains where to find it — your approximate employment dates and employers, your current address and bank details, plus your deregistration certificate (Abmeldung), if you have one. Missing something? We can recover your pension number and handle the deregistration in your name. You don't need to obtain your insurance record first — the final refund statement (Bescheid) shows it in full.
Is the process fully digital?
Yes — for Indian citizens the process is digital end to end: you submit your details and sign everything online, and we handle all communication with the pension office. One document needs a notary: we prepare a short Certificate of Life and Nationality for you, which you can have notarized online or at any local notary — most clients simply walk in without an appointment and send us the scan the same day. No original documents ever need to be mailed.
Do I need a German bank account to claim my refund?
For security, the pension refund process goes through an escrow account, managed by a German law firm. This approach speeds up the receipt of your funds, while also minimizing transaction and currency conversion fees. The funds will be transferred to your bank account in the currency you choose. You don't need a German bank account, and the account can be held in someone else's name.
How long does it take to process a German pension refund for Indian citizens?
At Germany Pension Refund, we know that our clients want their money as quickly as possible. Our streamlined process takes only 8 weeks on average (compared to the 6+ months it often takes for self-submitted claims) — we prepare each claim so it can be processed as efficiently as possible, we have expert knowledge of India as a contracting state, and our partner law firm has a direct connection to the German pension office.
Processing times ultimately depend on the responsible pension office, though. Some claims take longer because of departmental workloads or internal checks; a smaller number take up to six months, and exceptional cases longer still. That's normal — your entitlement doesn't shrink while you wait, and from the seventh month after a complete application, the pension office owes you 4% annual interest on top.
And you're never waiting alone: if your claim hasn't completed within about three months, we contact the pension office directly to check the status and clear avoidable delays; at six months, we escalate to the office's management. The six-month mark also has a legal meaning in your favor — it's not a deadline for your claim, but the point where German law gives you the right to formally act against an inactive office (Untätigkeitsklage). We keep you updated throughout, even when nothing is required from you.
Did your spouse or parent work in Germany?
If a family member died with German pension contributions on record, those contributions may be claimable by you. If their German record stayed under the five-year qualifying period, the closest family — spouse or registered partner first, then children — can claim a refund of the contributions. There is no waiting period, but this claim expires four years after the end of the year of death, so don't wait. If the record reached five years or more, a refund is not possible — but a German widow's or widower's pension may be payable instead, anywhere in the world, including India.
